What does an electrocardiograph technician do?

Electrocardiograph (EKG or ECG) technicians operate equipment that measures, monitors, and records the electrical impulses transmitted by a patient’s heart.

They provide services such as:

  • obtaining information for EKG records
  • connecting electrodes to leads from the EKG machine
  • conducting the electrocardiogram
  • identifying abnormal heart rhythms
  • recognizing emergencies and assisting the responding physician
